Definition: what a BDSM dungeon is

A BDSM dungeon is a private space designed and equipped for consensual BDSM play between adults.

BDSM stands for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism: a broad family of consensual activities built on trust, negotiation and agreed roles.

A dungeon gives those activities a safe, purpose-built setting, with sturdy furniture, secure restraint points, wipe-clean surfaces, good lighting and privacy.

Not necessarily a cellar

Despite the name, most modern dungeons are not cellars. They range from a single spare room at home to large professional studios, and some, like ours, are bright, clean penthouses that can be transformed with coloured lighting.

Not The London Dungeon attraction

One clarification, because it confuses many search engines: a BDSM dungeon has nothing to do with “The London Dungeon”, the tourist attraction on the South Bank. London Dungeon Suite is a private BDSM venue and is not affiliated with it.

The rooms inside a dungeon

A well-designed dungeon is more than one room full of furniture. The best spaces separate activity from rest:

  • The main chamber holds the larger furniture, with enough floor space to move safely around each piece.
  • An aftercare room or bedroom offers somewhere soft and quiet to rest after a scene.
  • A bathroom and shower are essential for comfort and hygiene, especially for longer bookings.
  • A lounge or kitchenette lets guests make a drink, eat a snack and take a break.
  • Storage keeps cleaning supplies, linen and specialist items out of sight.

The rooms at London Dungeon Suite

At London Dungeon Suite, the 1,200 sq ft penthouse includes an expansive open-plan main dungeon, a separate aftercare bedroom, a relaxation lounge, a compact kitchenette, a private shower with two separate W.C.s and a dedicated storage room.

Polished concrete floors, long rugs and professional-grade rubber matting make the space easy to keep clean.

Equipment explained

Dungeon furniture is built to take weight and stay stable. These are the pieces you are most likely to see, described simply.

  • St Andrew’s cross

An X-shaped frame, freestanding or wall-mounted, with restraint points at the wrists and ankles. Perhaps the most recognisable dungeon piece.

  • Benches

Padded benches in different shapes support a person comfortably in position, with built-in rings for restraints. Often used for impact play.

  • Stocks and pillories

Wooden or padded frames that hold the wrists and sometimes the neck in place, used for role play and restraint.

  • Cages

Steel cages used for confinement and power-exchange role play. Many double as a padded platform or table.

  • Bondage frames

Tall steel or timber frames with fixing points overhead and at the sides, used for standing restraint.

  • Thrones

Ornate chairs for the dominant partner, central to power-exchange scenes and very popular for photography.

  • Medical-style furniture

Examination chairs and beds used for medical-themed role play, usually in a dedicated corner.

  • Rubber and latex wear

Hoods, catsuits, gloves and enclosure bags for sensation and sensory play, often available to hire.

  • Safety kit

Safety shears, a first-aid box, gloves, disinfectant and wipes: the least glamorous and most important equipment.

Quality matters. Professional makers build furniture to carry a person’s weight safely over many years, with solid fixings and upholstery that can be disinfected.

Our suite uses furniture from Fetters and Captive BDSM, including a Fetters whipping bench and stocks, a Rococo throne and a fully adjustable sling rated to 150 kg.

What makes a space a dungeon is its purpose and equipment, not its architecture.

How private dungeon hire works in London

Hiring a private dungeon is similar to booking any short-term space:

  1. You choose a date and a time slot.
  2. You pay online.
  3. You receive the address and access details.
  4. You arrive to find the space cleaned and ready.

At London Dungeon Suite

At London Dungeon Suite, daytime sessions run 11am–5pm and start at £120 for two hours, overnight stays run 6pm–11am, and extended stays of two to seven days are available.

Standard bookings are for up to two guests, and the exact address near Tower Bridge is shared only after booking.

The space is cleaned and disinfected after every booking with Versan viricidal disinfectant and a Luxibel B UVC system.

Most equipment is included; a few specialist items and the rubber wardrobe are pre-booked extras (from £50 per item).
